Debates are an odd way to choose a president, which they do when the race is as close as this one. They would have appealed to Don Quixote’s feverish imagination, where a joust by a knight chosen by each side would decide the outcome of a battle instead of the relative strength, tactical skills and morale of the two sides.
Ronald Reagan put it in perspective when asked if he was nervous of going on the same stage as the president of the United States, Jimmy Carter. Hell, no, he claimed to have replied, “I’ve been on the same stage as John Wayne.”
