Beinart bends over backwards to accommodate Islam as essentially benign. He probably feels an obligation to make sure that he is not party to an overly critical view of Islamic doctrine, as that could be construed as discriminatory. As a Jew, he is probably trying to be careful not do to others what has been done to Jews. Well meaning, but intellectually dishonest, and stupid.
