Iran cannot remain both Persian and democratic — or “democratic” — with so many non-Persian peoples being held in thrall. The Azeris, the Kurds, the Baluchis (also to be found over the border in Pakistan), the Arabs who should best be described, for these purposes, as the “Ahwazi people” all have a right to self-determination. I’m sure that this is being discussed right now, on the shores of Lac Leman, by Secretary John Kerry, who threatens to bring up at the U.N. “self-determination for the Ahwazi people” if Mohammed Zarif does not give a little in the nuclear negotiations.
