Shi’a And Sunni Tensions, Sky-High In Iraq

Story here.

Societies suffused with Islam are naturally aggressive and violent. If there are no Infidels present to persecute or murder, other Muslims will do — provided they can be seen as less-than-perfect Muslims. Arabs regard non-Arabs as lower on the Islamic pecking order, and Berbers and Kurds, though Muslim, have been on the receiving end of such an understanding. Shi’a Muslims are regarded with distate – their public flagellations, their weepy Muharram, their shrines, their everything — by Sunnis, and by some, with more than distaste, as exhibiting features that qualify them to be considered as Infidels. Hezbollah and the Islamic Republic of Iran like to call the Sunni Muslims who regard Shi’a Muslims as Infidels “takfiris,” and allow themselves to believe they are a small number, and can be overcome. But they can’t, and the Shi’a of Hezbollah and the Islamic Republic will eventually realize this — and then what do they do? Even were they to destroy, or threaten to destroy, hated Israel, that would not turn the Shi’a into Sunnis, would not win them points. Indeed, many Sunnis would be delighted to see the Israelis destroyed, but not before they managed to also destroy Hezbollah and much, if not all, of the Islamic Republic of Iran.
