Something nostalgic for the VE Day anniversary

It’s a bank holiday in Britain today; usually these are a Monday but this year the May Day holiday which would have been earlier this week was moved to Friday (today) to accomodate celebrations for the 75th anniversary of VE Day (Victory in Europe)
All sorts of things were planned, most of which are now ‘virtual’ to be done one line and at home. One that wasn’t cancelled was the Red Arrows, the RAF display team’s, flypast over London. To get to London from their base in Lincolnshire they had to fly over Essex, and very impressive they were too.
The TV and Radio are showing a lot of documentaries, films and music of the period 1939 – 1945.  Dame Vera Lynn who was very popular at the time, and is best known for the songs Blue Birds Over the White Cliff of Dover and We’ll Meet Again (aka whale meat again) features heavily. At age 103 she is a true national treasure. Equally popular at the time (more so in some circles) was Anne Shelton, who had a very accomplished but less well known sister Jo.

Anne Shelton also had a presence in America in the later 40s and 50s. In England she sang with the famous dance band of Ambrose ( Bert Ambrose & His Orchestra.) Except when Glenn Miller was in the country; then she sang with him. She was younger than Dame Vera, and died relatively young in 1994

She is probably best known for her English language version of Lili Marlene. I had never heard her sing  ‘My Tenement Symphony’ until I called it up having read her obituary. It’s worth hearing.
