Terror suspect charged over Isil-inspired plot to attack US troops in the UK

From the Telegraph ,  Channel Four News and the Cambridge News

A man has been charged with allegedly plotting to attack US troops in the UK in an Isil-inspired plot. Junead Ahmed Khan, 24, of Luton, is suspected of planning the terror attack between May and July this year.

Khan and his uncle, Shazib Ahmed Khan, 22, also of Luton, have also been charged under terror laws with allegedly planning to travel to Syria to join Isil, also known as Islamic State. The pair was among three men arrested in Luton and Letchworth last week, one of them at gunpoint.

The third man was released without charge on Monday evening.

They have been charged under the Terrorism Act 2006 and the Syria related charges cover the period from August last year to May this year. Westminster magistrates court heard that Junead Ahmed Khan planned to stage a car accident and run over a US serviceman. Both men, the court heard, were planning to head to Syria to join Isis, and in preparation had looked into buying combat wear. Junead Ahmed Khan has been further charged with an additional count in connection with the alleged plot to attack the US military.

Deborah Walsh, deputy head of counter terrorism at the Crown Prosection Service said: “It is alleged that Junead Khan and Shazib Khan had been planning on travelling to Syria to join the proscribed organisation Islamic State in Levant (ISIL).

“It is further alleged that Junead Khan was planning a terrorist attack on US military personnel in the UK and he has been charged with an additional terrorism offence to reflect this.”

The event was scheduled to take place at RAF Feltwell, with members of RAF Lakenheath, RAF Mildenhall and the public invited, on July 4 but had to be cancelled following a raised security threat level.

A spokeswoman from RAF Lakenheath said: “We can confirm this is why the event was cancelled. However we cannot discuss details while the investigation is ongoing. Authorities from the UK and US, both military and civilian, will work together continually when addressing security concerns.”

Both men were remanded in custody, to appear at the Old Bailey on 10 August.

  1. Luton, yet again. Surely it’s time that there were simultaneous overwhelming-force surprise raid-and-searches upon every known mosque (and all associated premises/ businesses/ offices/ ‘community centres’) in and around Luton? Army sappers and sniffer dogs to conduct the searches. Find anything funny? – close the damn places down, permanently and, if not in heritage previously-Infidel-purpose premises, raze to the ground and deport the imam/s. Now that would send a message.
