To the modern mind the Middle Ages stand for all that is most backward, reactionary and superstitious. The very word medieval is used as a term of abuse by people who thereby seek to gain a moment of cheap superiority. Jack my good man, being a fellow Canadian I have one or three possible words of wisdom for you. The schooling you describe is now exclusive to the ruling classes, public education is for a far less noble function.
A few random thoughts on the matter.
Primarily, slaves only need be taught to listen and habituated to follow orders on acts of command. Modern education does this most efficiently.
Secondly, what occurred in schools was for a brief moment in time the illuminating education you allude to. Now it’s mere process, inclusive to a larger system of processes. It provides nothing more than inert, sterile and unrelated components, much like objects from a parts producer to be assembled at a later time but nothing comprehensible enough that can pose a threat to its makers.
Finally, after consuming one third of a person’s life and their peak vitality expended there stands a fully processed human with commercially exploitable wants and needs. No surprises, passions or lusts to disrupt the current order. Vitiated, carrying debts of many kinds to shackle the soul ensures a compliant and cowed simulacrum of a human being. We don’t even make prisoners sit in a chair for eight hours, that would be considered actual torture, why do we immobilize our kids for the most vital part of their lives? It’s function is so complete and invisible that these poor souls believe it to be a sanctuary and not the prison it is for their own children while they toil for mammon.
A foot note: A sortative function is used to recruit fresh stock where needed at the top, performed with Darwinian principles as means to assess; All the really cute kids get A’s and the biggest brutes are paddocked in hockey rinks, football fields or university so we can still keep an eye on them – the rest get trained to make the food, put things together and clean up. The creative class is well monitored too, regulators keep a close tabs on them just in case they make stuff that will threaten current capital investments.
So there you have it, what purpose would it serve to intellectually empower the unpopular and unattractive? No need to generate competition where it’s not wanted.
It’s not a conspiracy, just a consensus for an order from those who rule.
