The latest from the Telegraph. I don’t think I seriously thought it was anything other than an Islamic jihadist attack; but I was wrong once, so always cautious. The Islamic State (Isil) has claimed responsibility after a bucket bomb was detonated on a packed London Underground train at Parsons Green.
A huge counter-terrorism investigation is under way as this evening the Amaq news agency, which is linked to Isil, reported the terrorist group was behind the attack.
Prime Minister Theresa May has raised the UK’s terror threat level to ‘critical’ in the wake of the attack, meaning troops will be assisting police in their duties.
A major manhunt for the bomber has been launched, with police working with MI5 as they forensically examine the device. No arrests have so far been made and the attacker remains at large, with an unconfirmed report that the security services have identified a suspect from CCTV.
Pictures posted on social media appeared to show wires protruding from a flaming bucket inside a plastic carrier bag on the floor of a carriage.
The suspected device, apparently a builder’s bucket filled with a white substance that had been placed in a Lidl bag, was seen in flames afterwards, with wires hanging out of the bag. One theory is that the device failed to fully detonate.
