Why Bernie Loses

by G. Murphy Donovan (June 2016)

“The good is oft entered with their bones.” – WS, Julius Caesar

Monday morning quarterbacks are like book critics, they often confuse bestsellers with literature. So it is with politics. We often have trouble distinguishing entertainment from culture. 2016 is one of those years, where interesting and entertaining are well met. In the era of so-called “reality” shows, circus politics is probably just right for the times. After all, given all the hours of the day now spent in the virtual world or watching television, reality may not be that important anyway for many Americans. Fantasy football you say? Why not fantasy politics?  more>>>

  1. Mr. Donovan carefully avoids Sanders’ attack on the big banks and political rule by money, and indirectly promotes Trump as an honest man. Nice tricks, if you can get away with them..

  2. The “angry, adults” are all geriatrics who will never mutiny unless Medicare benefits are reduced so as not to include Viagra or no longer receive an AARP discount for accomplishing nothing of note but living to the approximate age of a Galapagos tortoise or have “twofer” Senior Citizen night at Taco Bell discontinued. Not a far stretch from “millennials”. We are all Galvanized Yankees now. Except you and me, of course.

  3. Honesty? Compared to whom? Surely not Mrs. Bill. And the angry demographics are not millennials and geriatrics. The 2016 angst legions are cops, firemen, carpenters, truck drivers, farmers, servicemen/women, hard hats, cowboys, weed whackers, and every other taxpaying plodder who is patronized and insulted by elites, right and left. for not having a college degree.

  4. When I think of Bernie Sanders that old British saying about W.E. Gladstone comes to mind:

"Beware of an old man in a hurry."

We having a long (8 week) election campaign here in Australia right now. What I have noticed is that we too are in thrall to what the government can do for us.  It's all about free stuff. There has been a fundamental shift in the Australian economy over the last few years.  Our mining sector is no longer the powerhouse that got us through the great recession relatively unscratched despite massive overspending by a socialist government.

But the people cannot get used to the fact that there is no money to pay for huge government schemes.  So even the conservative side of politics (confusingly called the Liberals) has to guarantee the continuation some ridiculous costly programs started by the last socialist government because the electorate can't seem to do without activist government and the 'free stuff' even if they know the country just doesn't have the readies to pay for it.

  5. Among the several bonuses I get from Murphy's essay is the reminder of an old onanistic semi-perversity: from now on I might say in an argument, "As Donovan says, the Left is essentially a circle-jerk."
