Birmingham: Concrete barriers up at German Market to stop suicide bombers

From the Birmingham Mail

Concrete barriers have been erected at Birmingham’s German Market to prevent suicide bombers.

The bollards were put up in Colmore Row and Bennetts Hill this week to safeguard the thousands who flock to the seasonal city centre attraction each day. Concerns have been raised that terrorists could carry out Nice-style mass murder – when a lorry was used to run over and kill 86 people.

It is estimated that 5.5 million people will visit the market before it closes on December 29

Mail readers admitted they had wondered why the barriers had gone up for the first time this year.

Paul Smith: “What is this country of ours coming to when we are reduced to these measures all our brave soldiers that fought and died for us in the two world wars but be turning in their graves.”

Margaret Ayres: “How tragic have we become.”
