In November 2008 I attended a service in London’s Whitehall and later wrote this
Last Voices of a Generation. The last three British men alive who fought in the Great War.
I think it is worth revisiting. Since then every veteran of WWII known to me personally has died, parents in law, uncles and aunt, neighbours and friends. Men and women who were in North Africa, Normandy, Italy, London and Burma. There are indeed many left, but they are all approaching the Queen’s telegram. Men of my own age who fought in the Falklands are retired. It’s the circle of life, but it doesn’t mean we shouldn’t take stock.
