Utrecht shooting UPDATES: Anti-terror police surround house in search for ‘gunmen’

One person has died and several more injured after a man opened fire on a tram in the Netherlands.

The shooting happened at 24 October Square in the city of Utrecht.

A counter terrorism chief confirmed there had been shootings at multiple locations in the city, and schools, mosques and transport hubs have been put on lockdown. Police have surrounded a nearby building, and are said to be searching for a red Renault Clio.

Anti-terror police have surrounded a home in Trumanlaan, close to the scene of the shooting, according to reports in the Netherlands. Agents on the roof of the address, which is thought to be be linked to the attack. NOS reports that mosques in the area have been evacuated as a precaution.

The head of the Dutch Counter-Terrorism Agency has confirmed there were shootings at ‘several’ locations in Utrecht. Pieter-Jaap Aalbersberg made the comment at a press conference about the initial attack, which has left one person dead and several injured.

In a warning to citizens, the city municipality said it cannot rule out further incidents. The Royal Military Police have confirmed that security has been stepped up across the country as a result.
